Tanzania Safari Guide 2026: Serengeti, Ngorongoro & Zanzibar
Tanzania is home to some of the most extraordinary wildlife destinations on the planet. The Serengeti stretches endlessly in every direction, alive with lions, cheetahs, and — between January and March — the greatest concentration of newborn wildebeest calves in the world. The Ngorongoro Crater is a self-contained world unto itself, a collapsed volcanic caldera that has become the densest natural concentration of wildlife anywhere in Africa. And when the safari is done, the white sand beaches of Zanzibar are just a short flight away.
This guide covers everything you need to plan a Tanzania safari in 2026 — parks, wildlife, costs, and the classic Serengeti-to-Zanzibar combination.
Why Tanzania is Worth the Trip
Tanzania consistently tops the list of Africa's best safari destinations for one simple reason: the scale. The Serengeti alone covers 14,750 square kilometres — roughly the size of Connecticut. The Ngorongoro Crater is 260 square kilometres of concentrated wildlife. Tarangire National Park has the largest elephant population of any park in northern Tanzania.
But what truly sets Tanzania apart is the Great Migration — the year-round movement of over 1.5 million wildebeest, 400,000 zebras, and 200,000 gazelles across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Unlike Kenya's Masai Mara crossings (which happen from July to October), Tanzania offers a different, equally spectacular chapter of the migration in a different season.
The Best National Parks in Tanzania
Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti is the heartbeat of Tanzania safari. Managed by Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA), its vast open plains, kopjes (rocky outcrops), acacia woodlands, and river systems support some of the highest lion densities on the continent.
What to see:
- Over 3,000 lions — the highest density in Africa
- Leopards resting in acacia trees along river systems
- Cheetahs hunting on the open central plains
- The Great Migration at different stages depending on season
- Enormous elephant herds in the western corridor
- Over 500 bird species
Best area to stay:
- Central Seronera: best year-round wildlife, most accessible
- Northern Serengeti: best for the July–October river crossings
- Southern Serengeti: best for the January–March calving season
Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the world's natural wonders — a collapsed supervolcano that created a 260 km² natural enclosure. Animals can leave but most don't bother. The result is an astonishing concentration of wildlife in a relatively small area.
What to see:
- One of the last stable populations of black rhino in East Africa
- Lions that never leave the crater floor
- Flamingos turning Lake Magadi pink in the dry season
- Elephants with unusually large tusks (old bulls that have learned to stay)
- Hippos in the freshwater pools
- Golden jackals, spotted hyenas, and African wild dogs
Tip: Day visitors must leave the crater by 6pm, so book a lodge on the crater rim for the best experience.
Tarangire National Park
Tarangire is often overlooked by first-time visitors rushing to the Serengeti — which means it feels wilder, less crowded, and genuinely untouched. During the dry season (June–October), the Tarangire River becomes the last water source for thousands of animals across the wider ecosystem.
What to see:
- The largest elephant herds in northern Tanzania
- Ancient baobab trees that create a surreal, prehistoric landscape
- Tree-climbing lions (a rare behaviour observed here)
- Over 550 bird species — one of Africa's top birding destinations
- Python, fringe-eared oryx, and gerenuk (rare, not found in Masai Mara)
Lake Manyara National Park
Small but spectacular — Lake Manyara is a great half-day add-on between Arusha and the central parks. The alkaline lake turns shocking pink when flamingos arrive. The forested escarpment at the park's edge is home to troops of baboons and a population of tree-climbing lions.
Tanzania Safari Seasons
| Season | Months | What Happens | |--------|--------|--------------| | Calving Season | Jan – Mar | 500,000 wildebeest calves born in southern Serengeti; predator feeding frenzy | | Long Rains | Apr – May | Lush green landscapes; fewer tourists; lower prices | | Dry Season | Jun – Oct | Great Migration river crossings in northern Serengeti; peak wildlife viewing | | Short Rains | Nov – Dec | Brief afternoon showers; green start to calving season |
Bottom line: Tanzania offers outstanding safari year-round. The dry season (June–October) is busiest and most expensive. For the calving season spectacle, January–February is extraordinary.
Tanzania vs Kenya: Which Should You Choose?
Both destinations are world-class. The question is what experience you prioritise.
| Feature | Tanzania | Kenya | |---------|----------|-------| | Best for | Authentic, off-grid safari feel | First-time safari, ease of access | | Great Migration | Calving (Jan–Mar) + River crossings (Jul–Oct in north) | River crossings (Jul–Oct) | | Conservation fees | Higher (Serengeti is more expensive) | Lower | | Flight connections | Kilimanjaro International Airport | Jomo Kenyatta (Nairobi hub) | | Add-on destination | Zanzibar beach | Diani or Watamu coast |
Many travellers combine both countries on a single trip — which is something Soul Tours Africa specialises in.
Where to Stay: Tanzania Lodge Recommendations by Park
Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti's vastness means lodge location matters enormously — choose your zone based on the season and what you want to see.
| Zone | Best Season | Why Stay Here | |------|------------|---------------| | Central Seronera | Year-round | Best all-round game; highest lion density; accessible roads | | Southern Serengeti | January – March | Wildebeest calving; cheetah on open plains; fewer visitors | | Northern Serengeti | July – October | Mara River crossings; intimate bush camps; top predator action | | Western Corridor | May – July | River crossings in the Grumeti; resident hippos and crocs |
Mid-range options (from $250/person/night): Seronera Wildlife Lodge, Serengeti Sopa Lodge — comfortable rooms, good food, restaurant-style dining, shared pools.
Luxury options (from $600/person/night): Four Seasons Serengeti, Singita Sasakwa, Nomad's Lamai — private plunge pools, gourmet food, exclusive game drives.
Mobile tented camps: Follow the migration across the ecosystem — set up for a few weeks near the river crossings then move south for calving. Asilia Africa and &Beyond run excellent seasonal camps.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Staying on the crater rim is a completely different experience from day-tripping in. The view from the rim at sunrise — the crater floor glowing 600 metres below — is one of Africa's great travel moments.
Mid-range (from $200/person/night): Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge, Rhino Lodge — simple rooms, reliable wildlife access, crater rim views.
Luxury (from $700/person/night): &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, Lemala Ngorongoro — dramatic architecture, four-poster beds, butler service, and extraordinary crater views.
Note: The Maasai community owns the Conservation Area and charges a $70 per person per day conservation fee on top of crater descent fees ($200 per vehicle per day). These costs are included in all Soul Tours Africa packages.
Tarangire National Park
Tarangire rewards those who stay inside the park rather than commuting from Arusha. The dry season (June–October) is peak time — animals concentrate around the river in extraordinary numbers.
Mid-range (from $180/person/night): Tarangire Safari Lodge, Boundary Hill Lodge — good food, guided walks available.
Luxury (from $450/person/night): Oliver's Camp, Swala Tented Camp — remote, intimate, exceptional guiding, big baobab landscapes.
The Serengeti-Zanzibar Combination
The classic Tanzania trip: 5–6 days on safari in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, then 3–4 days unwinding on Zanzibar's beaches. It is one of the great travel combinations in the world.
Why it works so perfectly:
- Domestic flights connect Kilimanjaro Airport to Stone Town (Zanzibar) in under 2 hours
- The contrast between wild savanna and turquoise Indian Ocean is deeply satisfying
- Zanzibar's spice heritage and Swahili food culture add a completely different dimension
- The water in Zanzibar is warmest and calmest between June and October — aligning with peak safari season

How Much Does a Tanzania Safari Cost?
Tanzania is more expensive than Kenya due to higher conservation fees and longer distances between parks. Expect to pay:
| Level | Per Night (per person sharing) | What to Expect | |-------|-------------------------------|----------------| | Budget | $300–500 | Tented camps, shared vehicles, no frills | | Mid-range | $500–900 | En-suite tented camps, private vehicles, quality guides | | Luxury | $900–2,500+ | Private butler, gourmet meals, exclusive-use camps |
Park fees alone in Tanzania average $60–80 per person per day in the Serengeti.
Soul Tours Africa packages start from $2,479 per person for a 6-day Tanzania safari. View pricing and itineraries here.
Practical Information for Tanzania
Visa & Entry
Most nationalities require a visa for Tanzania. A single-entry Tourist Visa costs $50 and can be obtained online in advance via Tanzania's e-immigration portal (the fastest option) or on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) or Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR). Citizens of East African Community states enter visa-free.
Your Tanzania visa covers both the mainland and Zanzibar — no separate permit needed for the island.
Getting There
From Europe: KLM flies Amsterdam–Kilimanjaro direct (9h 20min). Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways offer connections via Addis Ababa and Nairobi respectively. British Airways connects via Nairobi. Emirates flies via Dubai to Kilimanjaro.
From the Middle East: Emirates (Dubai–Kilimanjaro, 6h), Qatar Airways (Doha–Kilimanjaro via Nairobi or direct, 7h).
From within Africa: Nairobi–Arusha is serviced by Precision Air and Fly 540 (1 hour). Kenya Airways flies Nairobi–Kilimanjaro several times daily.
Internal flights: Charter flights between parks (Arusha–Seronera, Serengeti–Zanzibar etc.) are efficient but add approximately $150–350 per sector per person. Road transfers are comfortable in the north circuit but longer.
Currency & Money
Tanzania uses the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). US Dollars are widely accepted at lodges, for park fees, and at most tourist businesses. Bring crisp, undamaged notes dated 2006 or later — older or damaged notes are often refused.
- ATMs are available in Arusha, Moshi, and Dar es Salaam but unreliable in remote areas
- Most lodges accept Visa and Mastercard with a 3–5% surcharge
- Tip in USD or Tanzanian Shillings — guides typically receive $15–25/day, lodge staff $5–10/day
Health & Vaccinations
- Malaria: Tanzania is a malaria zone — prophylaxis is strongly recommended (consult your GP). Malarone or Doxycycline are the standard options.
- Yellow Fever: Certificate required if arriving from an endemic country (most of sub-Saharan Africa and parts of South America).
- Other: Typhoid and Hepatitis A vaccines are advisable. Altitude awareness needed near the Ngorongoro Crater rim (2,200m) and the Northern Highlands.
- Water: Drink bottled water only — provided by all lodges and included in Soul Tours Africa packages.
What to Pack
- Safari clothing: Neutral colours — khaki, beige, olive, and stone. Avoid white (visible dust) and dark blue (attracts tsetse flies).
- Layers: Mornings and evenings in the Ngorongoro Highlands can drop to 10°C even in summer. The Serengeti floor stays warm.
- Sun protection: High-factor sunscreen, wide-brimmed hat, UV-protection sunglasses.
- Camera: A 200–400mm telephoto lens is ideal for wildlife. Most mid-range smartphones also perform well in good light.
- Binoculars: Essential for birdwatching and spotting distant wildlife.
- Insect repellent: DEET-based is most effective. Apply at dusk.
